Prayer is the first practice that will be reckoned with

A person’s deeds can be judged whether they are good or bad based on their prayers. From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ العَبْدُ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ صَلَاتُهُ فَإِنْ صَلَحَتْ فَقَدْ أَفْلَحَ وَأَنْجَحَ وَإِنْ فَسَدَتْ فَقَدْ خَابَ وَخَسَرَ فَإِنِ انْتَقَصَ مِنْ فَرِيْضَتِهِ شَيْءٌ قَالَ الرَّبُّ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى : انَظَرُوْا هَلْ لِعَبْدِي مِنْ تَطَوُّعٍ ؟ فَيُكْمَلُ بِهَا مَا انْتَقَصَ مِنَ الفَرِيْضَةِ ثُمَّ يَكُوْنُ سَائِرُ عَمَلِهِ عَلَى ذَلِكَ . وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ: ثُمَّ الزَّكَاةُ مِثْلُ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ تُؤْخَذُ الأَعْمَالُ حَسَبَ ذَلِكَ .

“Indeed, the servant’s deeds that will be the first to be reckoned with on the Day of Judgment are his prayers. If his prayers are good, he will get luck and safety. If his prayer is broken, he will regret it and suffer losses. If there is something missing from the obligatory prayers, Allah Tabaroka wa Ta’ala says, ‘See whether the servant has the practice of sunnah prayers?’ Then the sunnah prayers will complete the obligatory prayers that are lacking. Likewise with other practices like that.” In another history, “Then zakat will be (calculated) like that. Then other deeds will be judged like that too.”

(HR. Abu Daud no. 864, Ahmad 2: 425, Al-Hakim 1/262, Baihaqi 2/386. Al-Hakim said that this hadith sanad is authentic and was not issued by Al-Bukhari and Muslim, this authentic assessment is agreed upon by Adz-Dzahabi.)
