Prayer is the Last Thing that Man Lost
From Abu Umamah Al-Bahili, he said, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
“The ties of Islam will be broken strand by strand. Every time it breaks, humans hang on to the next rope. The first thing to be interrupted is the law, and the last thing is prayer.”
(HR. Ahmad 5: 251. Shaykh Syu’aib Al Arnauth said that the sanad of this hadith is jayyid)
This hadith clearly states that when the first thread of Islam has been broken within a person, that is, he is not subject to Islamic law, he can still be called Muslim.
Here the Prophet did not say that when the first rope breaks, he becomes a disbeliever.
In fact, there are still other ropes, until the last one is the prayer.
From Zaid bin Thabit, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,
“The first thing a person takes up is a message and the last thing left is prayer.”
(HR. Al Hakim At Tirmidhi and mentioned by Shaykh Al Albani in Sahih Al Jami’, 2: 353).
